[OUR CONSORTIUM] Global Innovation Index: Lyon one of the world’s top 100 scientific and technological hubs

The Global Innovation Index, published each year by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), ranks countries and economies throughout the world. In this 2024 edition, the Lyon region has been ranked 92nd.

This ranking of the top 100 scientific and technological hubs “looks closer to the ground - using patent filing and scientific publishing data to identify local concentrations of world-leading science and technology activity”, according to the WIPO website.

It is based on 80 indicators, including measures on the political environment, education, infrastructure and knowledge creation of each economy at both national and local level.

Published on September 26, 2024, the Global Innovation Index ranks France 12th globally. The Lyon region is ranked 92nd overall, and 42nd in the “science and technology” sub-category. Therefore, this puts Lyon in second place in France, after Paris.

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) is the United Nations agency that serves the world’s innovators and creators. It provides services that enable creators, innovators and entrepreneurs to protect and promote their intellectual property across borders; WIPO also provides intellectual property data to guide decision-makers in public policies.

The Global Innovation Index, published by WIPO in partnership with the Portulans Institute, was launched in 2017. It assesses the results and ranks over 130 economies, according to their innovation ecosystem and draws conclusions for the benefit of economic policymakers.
